My Deep Dark Digital Secret

(From the first Matador dummy)

(test piece from This is The Firefighter)

This might come as a surprise, but five years ago, I worked exclusively on the computer. It was my editor, Nami, who convinced me to try painting, after seeing sketches for The Little Matador - and I'm soooo glad that she did. Working digitally was very convenient in college, but it was hard for me to connect with the work. I missed all of the sketches and color studies that it took to create non-digital illustrations, and hated how bare my studio walls were, due to a process that lived on my computer.

  3. Hey, Looking at the "He liked drawing animals best" art next to a copy of the book I have in my office....so glad it was painted. Beautiful!

  4. Aw, I'm so pleased to hear that, Tim! Doing away with computer art was one of the hardest decisions that I've had to make.

  5. I have a Wacom digital pen that I hardly ever use (such is the life of a boring academic) - but I suppose it's great if you can manage to use the best of both worlds, right? I love your picture books and illustrations. i'd try to see if any of the titles are found in our libraries here in Singapore.

  6. Hey Myra!
I finally puled my old wacom tablet out of my closet.
Lately, I've been playing with adding digital color to my sketches, but I'm having trouble making the combination look natural. I really admire Peter Brown's digital-color/sketch work. He does it in a very natural way.
